The etymology of the phrase “everything but the kitchen sink” probably has to do with the fact that the sink is difficult to move. For instance, if a person absconded with “everything but the kitchen sink,” it means he or she made off with every conceivable portable item. But here is a new way of looking at the term: What if said person didn’t take the hypothetical sink because it was too necessary to the kitchen? When you think about it, there are very few features in the home that are used as often. And what other home item performs as many different tasks? It could be argued that the selection of a sink is one of the most important kitchen choices you will make — and it’s a decision that will affect your daily life for many years to come. We spoke to designers who belong to the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) about how to select the right sink.

Example of a classic kitchen design in Seattle with a single-bowl sink, recessed-panel cabinets, black cabinets, multicolored backsplash and colored appliances — HouzzChoose an extra-large sink. As cooking progresses, dirty dishes mount. An oversize sink can corral them and keep them below eye level. Apron-front and single-bowl models work especially well. — kerrilepley EmbedEmailQuestion

Christina405 makes the case: “We can clean up after a party in nearly no time. One is in the just-large-enough pantry, which also has a large one-bowl sink; the other in the kitchen proper, which thus only needed a smaller prep sink. I use the closer dishwasher when baking or food processing. Just pop used bowls, implements, processor parts, etc. in and the mess is done.”.

Will the sink be a comfortable depth? Good question, and if you are doing your cabinets at the same time, you can have BOTH a deep sink and a comfortable height. Standing straight and and tall, measure the distance from your wrist to the floor. Do the same for that other person you hope will also be doing dishes. Surprisingly for me, this was about the same measurement for my tall husband and for me — and for us, significantly higher than the standard counter height. Then install that section of cabinets so the height of the installed sink bottom will be comfortable. For us, that meant the counter-top was higher than standard — easy to do with custom, and not that hard to accomplish with stock cabinets by making the toe-kick space taller.
